Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) has been identified as a major acute-phase protein and marker for inflammation in several animal species including horses and cats. It is useful for diagnosing the presence of inflammation and for real-time monitoring of inflammatory changes in disease states and response to therapy. SAA is highly conserved across species and can be measured using a quantitative double antibody sandwich ELISA.
