Proteinase K is a serine protease enzyme widely utilized in molecular biology for its ability to digest a broad range of proteins, including native and denatured forms. It is particularly effective in isolating RNA and DNA templates for PCR applications. The enzyme remains active over a wide pH range, with optimal activity between 6.5 and 9.5, and functions effectively under denaturing conditions, such as in the presence of SDS or urea. Additionally, Proteinase K exhibits stability at elevated temperatures, with an optimum digestion temperature of 65°C.
