Astrovirus

Astrovirus is an RNA virus transmitted by the fecal-oral route either directly or by ingestion of contaminated food. It causes gastroenteritis and diarrhea, mostly in children under the age of 2, and accounts for 2 to 9% of all cases of acute, nonbacterial diarrhea in children requiring hospitalization. There are eight serotypes of astrovirus with serotype 1 being the most frequently detected and the majority of individuals (90%) develop antibodies towards astrovirus by 9 years old. Detection is by RT-PCR or antigen detection by ELISA using stool samples.
